CURRENT SITUATION
Despite Nepal having a substantial population engaged in agriculture, it is not self- sustaining when it comes to food and the country relies heavily on imports. With the lock-down, food crisis is inevitable and many have already started seeing the impacts of it.
There is not enough production of food in the rural areas and daily wage workers are having difficulty making ends meet. The government has started the distribution of food, but it is insufficient and especially difficult to access for migrant workers and their families.
People, especially in rural parts are still not aware of proper hygiene, sanitation, and preventive measures. Many migrant workers that returned from India have not isolated or quarantined themselves, further risking transmission.
In fear of contracting the virus misinformation about the disease has led to stigmatisation and people have been discriminated against. This will only lead to people hiding their histories or symptoms.
Health centres are seriously under stocked, lacking even basic materials and equipment to protect staff and patients.
There is also a significant increase in abuse at home against girls and young women at this time.
AN EXAMPLE OF POSTERS WE WILL DISTRIBUTE WITH OUR LOCAL PARTNERS
OUR PLAN:
Using our network we plan to deliver the following:
1. Urgent relief packages to the people living in poverty (food, items for basic hygiene including menstruation kits for adolescent girls)
2. Distribution of required health materials and equipment to the health institutions to assist in tackling the virus. (Top Gloves, Surgical Gloves, Paper Mask, Mask N-95, Sanitizer, PPE Set, Infrared Thermometers)
3. Awareness on various aspects of COVID-19 through airing informative programs on FM/Radio, TV and other forms for medias. Radio and to a lesser extent TV are by far the best ways to communicate messages in the rural areas and has proved invaluable in other projects.
4. Circulation of Child and Girl friendly info graphics and posters translated into popular local dialects regarding COVID-19 prevention and awareness, what to do if infected. Also including information on abuse and violence reporting mechanisms, and other information as the situation evolves.
MONITORING AND REPORTING
Every item delivered to heath centres will be accounted for, including photo documentation. Deepak will sign off on all purchases and ensure delivery is made and we will receive reports on their usage. We will also record who exactly is receiving food and aid packages, including photo documentation where available. We have monitoring systems in place in these areas through our other projects and also associates with whom we have previously worked.
