A brand new bright and contemporary school for hundreds of deeply underprivileged local children. Project opening August 2024.
A new learning centre for approximately 175 children in Popel, rural Cambodia.
Education standards within rural subsistence farming communities are low, with only very basic levels of literacy and numeracy being attained. Many children, mainly girls, fail to enter secondary education.
To enhance the quality of education for students in rural areas, there is a move for NGOs to work alongside government schools providing supplementary classes in learning centres that become part of the community. This is a tried and tested successful approach to improving the education and lives of these underprivileged children.
Students will continue to have their government curriculum at the public school (near to the centre). At around midday they will finish their morning studies and head to the new centre for lunch and spend the afternoon there. They will have access to English Classes, Remedial Khmer, Maths classes, Computer classes, access to a library, informal study groups, Life Skill Workshops, Chess Clubs and general community activities.
Serving lunch means that students who finish public school in the morning don’t need to walk all the way home for lunch then all the way back to the centre to begin afternoon classes.
Parent workshops can also be held once a week and movie nights on the weekend.
The idea is to encourage village ownership over the centre. It will start as a learning centre but ideally also become a community centre within the village hosting events throughout the year.
Indigo Children’s Fund will be funding the construction of this project working alongside our trusted architectural partners, Building Trust International and Kulen Outreach who will be funding the day to day running costs once open as well as providing the midday meals.
The community is extremely excited about this project and the benefits it will bring to their children.
