PROJECT OVERVIEW
Purchase, repacking, delivery, and distribution of urgently needed relief goods to identified poor urban families that are suffering food shortage due to the government imposed Extended Community Quarantine in Cagayan de Oro City.
THE SITUATION IN CDO
In the Philippines, as of May 15 2020, there are only about 12,000 reported cases of Covid-19. Nevertheless, due to fears of the pandemic and concerns that the already seriously overwhelmed public health system could collapse, the government has imposed strict measures to prevent the rapid spread of the disease.
While the capital Manilla has been placed under lock-down, other cities have been placed under Extended Community Quarantine. Due to the imposed preventive measures many people have already lost their jobs or can no longer report to their work. Many families living in the urban slums have little or no access to money or food and are in a very difficult and stressful situation. Sadly as a result of this, suicide rates are on the rise in the poorest areas.
OUR FEEDING PROGRAM
The girls from our safe houses have been key to the success of our program.
On Thursday the 14th and Friday the 15th of May we successfully launched a feeding plan in the slums of CDO, providing much needed food and supplies for almost 800 families, helping well over 3000 individuals.
The safe houses that we have built for girls rescued from the sex trade have become a hub for packing goods for the slums. The staff and girls have been on full lock-down and therefore Corona-virus free. They have all pulled to together to make this plan happen.
It’s fantastic to see these girls who have been though so much in their young lives coming together to help other vulnerable people.
With the help of our partners on the ground, the program was a great success and managed as safely as possible in an attempt to maintain social distancing.
Every penny donated was spent on food and supplies, while all logistical costs were covered by the team locally.
Please take a look at the video of the packaging process in the children’s village to see the scale of the operation that the girls and staff successfully managed to execute.
