PROJECT PROPOSAL

A new learning centre in Popel, Cambodia

Working with our trusted architecture and development partners, Building Trust International, we plan to build a much needed new learning centre in Popel, rural southern Cambodia.

The standard of schools and schooling in rural areas is deeply sub standard and the children are losing out on opportunities in life because of this. The concept of learning centres is a tried, tested and successful solution to the children’s lack of education. The centre would work in conjunction with the local government school that is very close by, effectively becoming a much needed extension to the school.

The purpose of the centres is to push students to pursue education levels far beyond that which the community typically achieves. This centre will be run by Kulen Outreach, an organisation with whom we do a great deal of work. They provide teaching of a very high standard and raise their own funds to do this.

The site is in a beautiful area, surrounded by jungle and not too far from a large waterfall that attracts tourists. It's a great location for a learning centre and a community that is in need of advanced education to better capitalise on future eco-tourism growth.

One early stage design concept; converting shipping containers to build the centre

Students will have access to English classes, science, music, arts and crafts as well as a library.

The physical facilities will most likely consist of a technology centre (that can be locked up at night), a hand-washing/hygiene area, a kitchen, classrooms, and garden spaces.

The community is extremely excited about this project and the benefits it will bring to their children, approximately 150 kids will be served by this project.

This is a high impact project that we could replicate with relative ease throughout rural areas in Cambodia and I believe a great direction for ICF to take once this project begins.

BUDGET APPROX £35,000 to be finalised upon project approval

PLAYGROUND, EMMANUEL SCHOOL.

During lock-down we opened a beautiful little school in Mae Sot, Thailand.

We have been talking with the teachers and parents and the school is a great success with new students turning up all the time. We are already up over 40% in student numbers since opening.

One of the initial design concepts

They have asked if we might consider building the kids a playground, I have spoken to our architects and they are happy to do this. It would cost around £4000 and would be modular so it can be added to and moved over time as student numbers continue to increase.

It would be a really lovely addition to the school serving kids that would otherwise never have access to a good school, let alone a playground!
